TSENDIIN DAMDINSÜREN — THE SCHOLAR WHO BROUGHT THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE MONGOLS TO MODERN READERS

Ts. Damdinsuren

Tsendiin Damdinsüren (1908–1986) was a Mongolian writer, linguist, literary scholar, and translator whose work helped shape modern Mongolian literature. He is especially remembered for rendering The Secret History of the Mongols, the foundational medieval chronicle of Mongolian history, into modern Mongolian.

Originally composed in the thirteenth century, The Secret History of the Mongols preserves accounts of the origins of the Mongol people, the rise of Chinggis Khan, and the formation of the Mongol Empire. Its language and historical references present major challenges to modern readers. Damdinsüren’s work made this important text accessible to a much wider Mongolian-speaking audience.

He began publishing portions of his translation in the early 1940s. In 1947, the complete work was published in Ulaanbaatar in traditional Mongolian script. A Cyrillic edition followed in 1957. His version became one of the most influential modern Mongolian renderings of the chronicle.

Damdinsüren’s contribution extended beyond translation. He wrote poetry, fiction, and literary criticism, conducted linguistic research, and contributed to the development of modern Mongolian written language. He also helped compile an important Russian–Mongolian dictionary and wrote lyrics for a version of Mongolia’s national anthem.

His work illustrates how historical heritage survives not only through the preservation of ancient manuscripts, but also through careful scholarship, translation, and the renewal of language. By bringing a medieval text to modern readers, Damdinsüren helped connect Mongolia’s literary past with its modern cultural life.
